Hey folks in the United States, it's Daylight Saving Time(DST) again. Don't forget to move your clock forward. You might be late for work or meeting. Officially the change to daylight saving time should be 2am today, March 9, 2008, though we, and I assume other folks change their clocks before going to bed. Reminder also to install new batteries in warning devices like smoke detectors and hazard warning radios. I was surprised that some parts of the country don't observed DST like Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.
I'm still wondering what's the point or reason of this daylight saving time? According to the US Dept. of Transportation :
- It saves energy. When we're awake, we're more likely to have our TVs, VCRs, and lights on (among other home appliances). By shifting the hours we're likely to be awake to correspond with the daylight outside, we're less likely to have the lights on, so we use less electricity.
- It saves lives. When people's waking hours correspond with daylight hours, they're safer. Traffic accidents, for example, are less likely when it's light out.
- It cuts down on crime. Crime tends to happen after dark. As is the case with accidents, people are less likely to fall victim to crime when their waking hours are synched up with the sun.
And this means more things to me too, the temperature rises and the daytime will be longer. It's amazes me by the time of 8o'clock, it's still bright outside.
